Scarlett Johansson (born November 22 1984 New York City New York, U.S.) American actress and vocalist whose dramatic range earned her popular acclaim in a variety of genres ranging from period drama to thriller and action adventure. Johansson was the daughter of an architect and producer was brought up in New York City. Her twin brother Hunter and her brother Hunter were among the youngest of siblings. As a toddler she discovered an aptitude for acting and began auditioning commercials as young as seven. She entered the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute shortly after and attended an acting class at Professional Children's School, Manhattan to further her education. The Off-Broadway show Sophistry she performed with Ethan Hawke at age 8, and in North produced by Rob Reiner in 1994 she began her film debut. Johansson made her debut on screen in Just Cause (1996), but her most memorable role was Manny & Lo 1996 that made her famous. The film tells the story of two teenage girls running away. She next earned critical acclaim for her role as the teen victim of a disfiguring accident on screen in The Horse Whisperer (1998) while she was also acclamated as cynical teen outcast Rebecca on the set of Ghost World (2001).
